The word “Depression” has become a very common term these days and very often people get confused between being unhappy and depression. In reality, being depressed is a much more complex situation and if ignored or not treated well, it can last months or even years. Also, it can affect your mental and physical health.

What is depression?

Depression is a long term issue and can be described as a mood disorder with a feeling of sadness, loss of interest and loneliness. It can start with any life-changing event and can be triggered by various factors such as –

  1. Bipolar disorder
  2. Social factors
  3. Environmental issues
  4. Psychological factors
  5. Changes in the levels of brain’s neurotransmitter

 

While it is good to know the differences between depression and being unhappy, it is also important to know the symptoms.

Symptoms of depression:

  1. Loss of interest
  2. Feeling sad for a long time
  3. Excessive sleeping
  4. Anxiety
  5. Crying very frequently
  6. Drastic mood swings
  7. Unable to concentrate on anything
  8. Feeling unworthy
  9. Acting recklessly
  10. Getting addicted to alcohol
  11. Distancing from family and friends
  12. Talking about death

 

How can you treat depression?

Depression should be treated under the supervision of a doctor and can be done with medication, support from family or friends and therapy. Also, one should not stop the medication abruptly as it may lead to a relapse. But one shouldn’t neglect or ignore the symptoms and should seek experts help in getting back to normal.

In case, if you suspect that someone you know is suffering with depression, make sure you encourage them to seek professional help. Always listen to them without judging and acknowledge their symptoms.
