Why Covaxin is costlier than Covishield and Sputnik V?

Ever wondered why Covaxin is costlier than Covishield and Sputnik V? Well, here is the answer.

A Covishield dose cannot cost more than ₹ 780 a dose and Russia’s Sputnik V will cost a maximum of ₹ 1,145 a dose and also, Covaxin cannot be costlier than ₹ 1,410 a shot. This includes ₹ 150 in GST or Goods and Services Tax.

Interestingly, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is the third costliest vaccine globally and also it is the only made-in-India vaccine. It is almost double the price of Covishield and costs as much as Pfizer abroad – around $19.
According to experts, Covaxin’s technology involves higher costs.

“Covaxin’s technology is very different from Covishield and Sputnik. For Covaxin, an inactivated whole virus is used, so hundreds of litres of expensive serum have to be imported, and the virus is grown in this serum under BSL labs, with utmost precautions, and then inactivated,” said Rakesh Mishra, Adviser, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology.

“I can understand Covaxin costing almost double of Covishield but why Covishield and Sputnik V are differently priced may have commercial reasons. Technology-wise, mRNA vaccines are easiest, cheapest to make and don’t need elaborate facility,” Dr Mishra said.

Tooth dislodged? Here's what you should and shouldn't do

The natural smile with your teeth is evergreen and must be kept safe at all times. There is no replacement for a natural tooth. Often, due to various different circumstances, especially due to a fall or hit to the face, one or more teeth may be dislodged and may come out of its original position. Your dentist can save that tooth if you meet your dentist within a specific time.

The first hour after your tooth/teeth have been dislodged from your mouth is the most important hour to save your tooth/teeth. Here are a few things which you can do at home or from the nearest location, where the incident has occurred.

Do’s:

  1. Pick the tooth from the crown portion and wash with Milk or Distilled Water.
  2. After cleaning, try to put it back in the mouth and apply gentle pressure by placing a gauze/cotton roll and biting on it.
  3. In case you are unable to bite on it, take a container and collect Own Saliva, OR, pour some milk and place the tooth in the container.
  4. Maintain moist environment for the tooth and go to your nearest Dentist within 1 hour.

Don’ts:

  1. Pick the tooth from the root portion.
  2. Wash with Tap water.
  3. Keep the tooth in a dry environment.

Under any/either circumstance of replacing the tooth in the socket, please meet your nearest Dentist for further solutions.

If there is a delay of more than the hour, the Dentist can still place your tooth back, in the socket, within 8 hours after doing further protocol and will inform you of further treatment options.

Do soft drinks lead to tooth wear?

People love soft drinks and we know that but the important thing to note is that the sugar-sweetened drinks, such as soft drinks can lead to tooth wear among adults.

And, researchers have confirmed this.

“It is the acidic nature of some drinks such as carbonated drinks and acidic fruit juices that leads to tooth wear,” said study lead author Saoirse O’Toole from King’s College London.

“This is an important message for obese patients who are consuming calories through acidic sugar sweetened drinks. These drinks may be doing damage to their body and their teeth,” O’Toole said.

The study further found that being overweight or obese was undoubtedly associated with having tooth wear.

They also found that the increased consumption of sugary soft drinks may be a leading cause of the erosion of tooth enamel and dentine in obese patients.
