What is astigmation?

Astigmation:

Astigmation is a common problem caused by an irregularly shaped cornea that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light-sensitive surface at the back of the eye.Blurred or distorted vision at any distance is the most common symptom of astigmation. People with astigmatism may also have eye strain, headaches, squinting to try to see clearly, or eye discomfort.

Frequent symptoms:

  1. Blurred vision
  2. Double vision
  3. Eye strain
  4. Headaches
  5. Low night vision
  6. Excessive squinting
  7. Eye pain
  8. Dry eyes
  9. Itching or burning eyes
  10. Squinting
  11. Headaches, especially around your eyes an forehead
  12. Blurred or doubled vision
  13. Poor concentration
  14. Eye twitching
  15. Photo-phobia (light sensitivity)

Sense of sight is the most important sense in our six senses. What we perceive comes through our sense of sight. Blindness,vision loss and also developing eye disease such as cataracts and glaucoma can be reduced by protecting your eyes.

Tips to maintain eye health :

  1. Don’t smoke
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Wash your hands
  4. Wear sunglasses
  5. Use safety eye wear
  6. Get a good night’s sleep
  7. Visit your eye doctor regularly
  8. Reduce usage of devices and blue light
  9. Choose to eat food rich in antioxidants, like vitamins A and C, foods like leafy, green vegetables and fish
  10. Have regular eye exams
  11. Ensure your room is well lit

Know about the photophobia which causes migraine

Migraine:

Migraine is a headache that mostly affects only on one side of the head and it is often accompanied by nausea and a disturbed vision. The most common symptom for migraine is photo-phobia, or hypersensitivity to light.

Photo-phobia:

Photo-phobia is a discomfort in eye due to bright light. Bright lights, changes in light levels, and sunlight can also cause migraine. It is recommended to wear sunglasses, or even normal glasses to not to get affected by the photo-phobia.

 Symptoms of photo-phobia:

  1. Aversion to light
  2. Sensitivity to light
  3. Squinting one or both eyes
  4. Pain or discomfort when looking at the light
  5. Seeing bright colored spots, even in the dark or with your eyes closed
  6. Difficulty in reading or looking at pictures or text

Mostly people with migraine have photo-phobia. Many migraine patients are light sensitive between the migraine episodes. There are chronic migraines also where patient will have more light sensitivity.

Remedies:

  1. Wear polarized sunglasses, while going out
  2. Avoid using fluorescent lighting at home
  3. Bring in natural light as much as possible.

AIIMS conducting study to ascertain presence of Covid in various parts of eye

A study is underway by the RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS to ascertain the presence of coronavirus in various parts of the eye of those people who have died due to the infection.

The centre’s chief Dr JS Titiyal revealed the same.

While addressing a press conference on the 36th Eye Donation Fortnight celebration by the National Eye Bank (NEB), he said that five eye balls have been collected for carrying out the study.

“The research study will help ascertain the presence of the coronavirus in the cornea, optic nerve and retina of Covid-19 infected deceased,” Titiyal said.

“These eye balls will be subjected to various molecular tests to detect the presence of the Covid virus in these tissues and also look for genetic evidence,” he said.
