Sania Mirza bats for mental health conversations around athletes

As someone who has in the past opened up about dealing with mental health issues, tennis star Sania Mirza feels that conversations about maintaining both physical and mental wellness for players is important.

Noting how a lot of sporting icons are coming out and discussing matters of mental health, the 34-year-old says it is pretty amazing to see them be so open about their mental well being. “A lot of high profile players and athletes coming out and saying they are not okay. People sometimes forget that athletes are regular humans too and also feel the pressure of many things mentally, not just physically. Definitely, there is more and more talk about mental health now and people are more aware,” notes Mirza.

“I think everybody has their own way of dealing with metal health issues. Personally, I think it is very brave for them to come out and speak about the issue that they have. It is really good to prioritize mental health because mental well being is as important as physical well being,” she adds.

Tennis player Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open to tend to her mental health, England cricketer Ben Stokes withdrew from a series to prioritise his mental health after a tough last few and American gymnastics star Simone Biles had opted out of five of the six finals at the Tokyo Olympics because of a mental block.

This transformative approach has me feeling stronger, longer, and leaner.”

She added, “The goal of aerobic conditioning in pregnancy should be to maintain a good fitness level throughout without trying to reach peak fitness.”

Anushka Sharma: Worried about hating my own body after pregnancy

Actor-producer Anushka Sharma and her husband Virat Kohli welcomed their first child, Vamika in January this year.

In a recent interview with Grazia, she opened up about embracing body positivity and said, “Only a week ago, I was telling a friend how afraid I was because of this pressure that’s thrust upon women to look a certain way, even before they become mothers, before they get pregnant, and definitely after they’ve had a baby. Despite being somebody who is fairly self-aware, I was worried. I kept thinking – am I going to hate my body?”

The actress added, “I’ve realised that it’s a state of mind, it has nothing to do with how you look,” she said. The actress added, “My body’s not as it used to be; it’s not as toned as it was. And I’m working towards it because I like to be fit. Having said that, I am so much more comfortable in my skin today than I was before, even when I had that perfect body.”

She further stated, “I don’t do that anymore. I click a picture and I post it without obsessively scrutinising how I look. You have to be accepting of the body that’s done something so profound and miraculous for you. I’d never want my daughter to grow up with that sense of lacking that we’re always made to feel as women. Ultimately, it’s all about perspective. The girl who has the ‘perfect’ body can still not feel great while the girl who doesn’t have a body that aligns with societal beauty standards can still, be immensely confident.”
